This years 'A Very DIY Xmas Message' comes from dear friend, DIY gang member, Zoo Keeper and wedding guest extraordinaire Dan Kemp:

"Lyrics from songs give us power. They hit us like a steam train as they communicate to us. We are seen and heard through the voices of people we have never met. They connect us.

There is one iconic lyric that springs to mind when pondering 2020. Let’s go back to 2006.

“We’re all in this together” – Cast of High School Musical

Without unity we’re fucked. Bushfires, Black Lives Matter, Brexit, Biden and a “bloody serious” pandemic has given us consistent proof of the power of community. How do we rebuild communities burnt to the ground? How do we nurse sick and injured animals back to health? Repair divided communities? Teach understanding and compassion to our fellow man? Vote a normal human into the most powerful seat in the western world? Get through a pandemic? None of this can be done without a rock solid collaborative basis.

The lessons learnt from 2020 will last a lifetime. And not as a memory because we’re going to need to use them over and over again. This was the year we all deserved for how slack our actions are. Gone are the days of doing ‘your bit’, as Sarah Wilson says we must now do whatever is necessary. Whatever is necessary to ensure we don’t live in another doomsday film, whatever is necessary to ensure we don’t have another toddler in the White House.

Our only path forward is love and hope. These are the only two things that have brought true meaningful change within human society. Homo sapiens survived due to their ability to hope. Early man could imagine a goal in their head and aim for it. Hope for a brighter tomorrow and execute with love.

Good will to all is for life, not just for Christmas."
